This Week on Purple Day: The Shoemaker & the Elves

Purple Day is a podcast from Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Our Purple Day podcasts are the audio from Storytime’s Monday episodes.

In this week's episode of Purple Day, we will sing seasonal songs and then hear a story. This Storytime episode will teach you and your child seasonal songs, poems, and fingerplays as well as a nature-based story. Enjoy Storytime with your child and deepen your connection to each other and the world around you.

This Week on Purple Day

Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime.
During circle time we learn seasonal songs and poems together. This week we learn the final verses to our songs and poems for this month’s circle time. We also practice our deep breathing exercise at the end of circle time on Mondays. This month we are learning Hand Breathing.

After circle time, we hear a story together. Today we hear the story of the Shoemaker and the Elves. An old shoemaker has enough leather left to make only one pair of shoes. He cuts out the leather one evening and sets it on the bench along with a thread and needle. Everything was in its place so he could start the work the next morning. The next morning he wakes to find the shoes already made; and made quite well!

Bulbs, unknown
Winter tells us little bulbs
To tuck our heads in so,
Then we will not need to shiver
When the cold winds blow.

Spring will come with sun and showers
Soon to raise our head.
Then we’ll grow and grow and grow,
Right out of bed.

Purple Day is a podcast from Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Our Purple Day podcast episodes are the audio from our Monday videos. Storytime Members have access to five videos each week along with corresponding activities and curriculum.

This Tuesday, Storytime members go on a “Craft Visit with Ms. Rae.” During these twice-monthly visits, we learn how to make a new, nature-based craft. This week we make lavender sachets.

Every Yellow Day, or Wednesday, we are outside for Storytime, and we go on a field trip to see someone in the community or visit a new place. This week we visit a leather shop and learn about all the things you can make with leather. We even get to see a leatherworker in action.

On Thursdays and Fridays, Storytime members watch a puppet show of our weekly story.
