This Week on Purple Day: Shimmer & Glimmer's New Home

In this week's episode of Purple Day, we will sing songs about summer and then hear a story about two fishies who live in two different homes. This Storytime episode will teach you and your child seasonal songs, poems, and fingerplays as well as a nature-based story. Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime. 

During circle time, we learn seasonal songs and poems together. This week, we learn new lines and words to our poems, making our circle time slightly longer than last week. We also practice a mindful breathing exercise. This month we are learning Pretzel Breathing.

After circle time, we hear a story together. The second week of each month, we hear a pedagogical or teaching tale. These stories address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. Today we hear the story of Shimmer and Glimmer’s New Home, a story about separation or divorce. Shimmer and Glimmer live with their fishy parents in a rocky cove in the sea. One day a big storm comes to the cove and causes it to change. Now it is two rocky coves instead of one, with one parent fish living on one side and the other living on the other. Thankfully, there is still a long path connecting the two coves. One of the first things the fishies do in their new home is gather some soft seaweed and make a cozy bed nestled in the rocks. Now they have a place to sleep in both coves.

Over in the meadow, in the sand in the sun

Lives a dear mother froggy and her little froggy one

Hop says the mother. “I’ll hop,'' says the one.

So they hop and they hop in the sand in the sun.

Over in the meadow in the stream so blue

Lives a dear mother fishy and her little fishies two.

“Swim,” says the mother. “I’ll swim,'' say the two.

So they swim and they swim in the stream so blue.
