This Week on Purple Day: The Woman & the Mouse

Purple Day is a podcast from Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Our Purple Day podcasts are the audio from Storytime’s Monday episodes. Please note: Storytime is written and recorded for the screen. Some elements of Storytime will transfer better than others.

In this week's episode of Purple Day, we will sing songs about autmn and then hear a story about a mouse who visits a woman while she is spinning her wool into yarn. This Storytime episode will teach you and your child seasonal songs, poems, and fingerplays as well as a nature-based story. Enjoy Storytime with your child and deepen your connection to each other and the world around you.

Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime.

We enjoy singing and reciting nature-based, seasonal songs and poems during circle time. As the month progresses, we learn new song and poem verses. This week, we learn the final verses to our songs and poems for this month’s circle time. We also practice a deep breathing exercise on Mondays.

After circle time, we hear a story together. We listen to nature stories and folk tales during the third and fourth weeks of the month. Today, we hear the story of The Woman and the Little Mouse. An old woman is spinning wool into yarn to make herself a new sweater because her old one is getting worn and no longer keeps her warm.  A curious mouse visits and asks what the woman is making and what she will do with her old sweater when her new one is complete. The little mouse returns every day for the rest of the week, asking the woman questions about what she is doing…ever curious about what will happen to the old clothes when replaced with new ones.

This Month’s Breathing Exercise: Dragon Breathing

During this calm breathing exercise, children imagine their “fiery breath” and can even feel it on the back of their hands.

Instructions:

  • Place your hand just in front of your mouth.
  • Take a big breath in.
  • Hold for four seconds.
  • Breathe out slowly and make a low dragon sound: haaaaaahhhhhh!
  • Repeat two more times.
