This Week on Purple Day: The Cranky Chicken / a pedagogical tale
Purple Day is a podcast from Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Our Purple Day podcasts are the audio from Storytime’s Monday episodes.
In this week's episode of Purple Day, we will learn more songs and stories to go with our circletime and then hear a story about a chicken who learns to use his beak for helpful things and not hurtful things. This audio of our Storytime episode will teach you and your child seasonal songs, poems, and fingerplays as well as a nature-based story. Enjoy Storytime with your child and deepen your connection to each other and the world around you.
This Week on Purple Day
Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime.
During circle time, we learn seasonal songs and poems together. This week, we learn new lines and words to our poems, making our circle time a little longer than last week. We also practice a mindful breathing exercise. This month we are learning Rainbow Breathing. This is a fun way to teach children how to stop and take deep breaths. Listen and give it a try!
After circle time, we hear a story together. The second week of each month, we hear a pedagogical or teaching tale. These stories address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. Today we hear the story of The Cranky Chicken, a chicken who has to learn to use her beak in helpful ways and not hurtful ways.
“I’m a cranky chicken and I want you to see
My strong beak is the best part of me.”
“Use your beak in helpful ways, not hurtful ways.”
“I’m no longer a cranky chicken, and I’m here to say
I use my beak in helpful ways.”
Purple Day is a podcast from Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Our Purple Day podcast episodes are the audio from our Monday videos. Storytime Members can access five weekly videos, including puppet shows on Thursdays and Fridays. They also have access to corresponding activities and curricula. Every Yellow Day, or Wednesday, we are outside for Storytime, and we go on a field trip to see someone in the community or visit a new place. This week we visit a friend in the community and learn how she cares for her backyard chickens.
This week our members also have a “Craft Visit with Ms. Rae” and learn how to make a wet-felted birds nest!
Please note: Storytime is written and recorded for the screen. Some elements of Storytime will transfer better than others.
