This Week on Purple Day: Pip the Pumpkin Pixie/ A pedagogical tale

Purple Day is a podcast from Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Our Purple Day podcasts are the audio from Storytime’s Monday episodes. Please note: Storytime is written and recorded for the screen. Some elements of Storytime will transfer better than others.

In this week's episode of Purple Day, we will sing autumn songs and then hear a story about a little pixie who learns to keep his room tidy. This Storytime episode will teach you and your child seasonal songs, poems, and fingerplays as well as a nature-based story. Enjoy Storytime with your child and deepen your connection to each other and the world around you.

During circle time, we learn seasonal songs and poems together. This week, we learn new lines and words to our poems, making our circle time slightly longer than last week. We also practice a mindful breathing exercise. This month, we are learning dragon breathing.

After circle time, we hear a story together. We hear a pedagogical or teaching tale the second week of each month. These stories address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. Today, we hear the story of Pip the Pumpkin PIxie. Pip the Pumpkin Pixie usually keeps his pumpkin home clean and tidy, but one day, something changes, and he stops picking up after himself. Soon, his pumpkin is so messy his friends don’t have room to come over and play. Pip’s friends wish for the fairies to come and help Pip tidy up his pumpkin so they can play again.  Their wish is granted, and 10 little fairies take over Pip’s 10 fingers, putting him to work cleaning his pumpkin home from top to bottom.

Lessons from the Schoolhouse

Our story this week focuses on the importance of tidying up. Children can start with household chores and responsibilities early! Parents often ask me what they can expect of their children and how to get them on board with chores.

Here are three blog posts that will help you:

I wrote a blog post about developmentally appropriate chores for children that you might find helpful: https://www.littleroundschoolhouse.com/blog/choresforchildren

I wrote another post that discusses the "5 Ingredients to Get Children to Help Tidy-up": https://www.littleroundschoolhouse.com/blog/tidying-up-with-children

Lastly, this puppet show of the Tale of Ms. Tiggly Wiggly is a good one to share when talking about chores:
