Every Wednesday during Storytime, we take a field trip. This week, join Ms. Becca and her family as they hike up to Rich Mountain Fire Tower, near the small town of Hot Springs, North Carolina.

The tower was built in the 1930s, and a forest fire lookout lived and worked there, watching over the mountains for smoke, until the 1970s. It has since been restored and opened to the public. As we climb, we take in the wide, quiet view and wonder together about the people who once kept watch from way up high.
There is no worksheet and nothing to finish. Simply sit down with your child and enjoy the field trip together. Afterward, you might take a walk of your own, look for a high place to see far, or talk about who helps keep a forest safe.
